Essex Cardiothoracic Centre
Dr John Davies is an Interventional Consultant Cardiologist at the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre in the United Kingdom, recognised internationally for his expertise in complex coronary intervention and chronic total occlusion (CTO) angioplasty.
Born in Neath, Wales in 1973, Dr Davies studied at Guy’s Hospital, graduating in 1997 with honours in Clinical Pharmacology and Medicine. He completed specialist cardiology and interventional training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, The London Chest Hospital, and later at the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre. During this time, he undertook doctoral research at Jesus College, Cambridge University, earning a PhD for work on quantifying inflammation within atheromatous plaques.
Appointed as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist in 2008, Dr Davies has developed a leading clinical practice in complex coronary disease, with a particular focus on CTO angioplasty. In 2012, he co‑founded the specialist CTO service at the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, which has since performed more than 1,000 successful CTO procedures and established innovative systems for Heart Team decision‑making, patient assessment, and follow‑up.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Davies has been instrumental in building a thriving research programme and has authored over 100 scientific publications. He is widely regarded for his contributions to CTO research and is the Chief Investigator of the landmark ORBITA‑CTO trial — the first placebo‑controlled study of coronary angioplasty in patients with angina and CTO, the results of which were presented as a late-breaking clinical trial at the American College of Cardiology Scientific Sessions in 2026 in New Orleans.
